PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) —
An attempted carjacking led to gunfire in a prison parking lot overnight.
The incident occurred outside the House of Correction on State Road in Bustleton just after 11 p.m. Friday.
Police say 26-year-old Jamal Bennett tried to carjack a correctional officer right after his release.
The pair struggled and the 66-year-old officer was thrown to the ground.
He reportedly pulled out his private weapon and fired one shot, hitting Bennett in the chest.
“It seems like he was starting his life of crime over again, within minutes of being released, attempting to carjack this off-duty correctional officer. So it is somewhat bizarre but the correctional officer is in stable condition and at this time it appears the 26-year-old who was shot, although he is critical, appears that he is going to survive, ” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Bennett has been in and out of the prison system. He had been serving time for a probation violation.
