NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) —
Philadelphia police are investigating a shooting in the city’s Juniata section.
It happened just before 7:30 p.m. along the 4000 block of L Street.
Details remain sketchy but the victim, described only as a 16-year-old male, was rushed by private auto to Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police stopped a car nearby at 10th and Russell streets and said they were trying to determine if the occupants are connected to the shooting. Police subsequently handcuffed the driver of the car and placed him in a police car. Police said they were cuffing the alleged shooter for transport when somebody opened the door to the cruiser and let the driver out. According to investigators, he fled on foot, still in handcuffs.
A police helicopter and SWAT teams began searching the area around 10th and Russell streets. According to officials, scent-tracking dogs following the suspect led officers to a large heroin packaging and distribution facility.
Police said the victim is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the chest.
No word on a motive for the shooting.
